-latent (2026)
What can be computed, and what is viscerally experienced through the body. —What lies between the two?
With the emergence of generative AI and large language models, the realm of what can be described through language and mathematics—and from which new images and meanings can be generated—is rapidly expanding. Yet in experiences such as drinking water when we are thirsty or feeling the wind beneath the shade of a tree, there seems to be something that inevitably escapes such description. This work is a painting reconstructed from an image produced after AI extracted certain features from my own profile photograph and those features were removed. Even from fragments that were not selected to form the image, can we still perceive meaning—or a sense of what makes someone who they are? As a new work in the LATENT series, which explores human perception and sensation, this is the first time I have used myself as the subject.
