This work is an attempt to translate the "limits of interpretation" that occur within the processing of VAE (Variational Autoencoder), a core technology of generative AI, onto a physical canvas.Through the mathematical process of compression and reconstruction within the latent space, I extract the minute discrepancies—"residuals"—that the algorithm deems "non-essential" and discards. The resulting work is a reconstruction of these fragments alone. What is presented here is not a figurative image, but rather the loss of information that inevitably arises during the process of perception. AI, built upon vast datasets, continuously and selectively abstracts the world. This work visualizes the structure of the "uncomputable noise" omitted in that process, questioning the nature of human recognition—how we still find meaning and presence within those remains.

 

生成AIの基盤技術であるVAE（Variational Autoencoder）が情報を処理する過程において生じる「解釈の限界」を、物理的なキャンバスへと置換する試み。潜在空間への圧縮と再構成というプロセスの中で、アルゴリズムが「非本質的」と判断し切り捨てた微細な差分（residual）を抽出し、その断片のみを再構成した。ここで扱われているのは形象ではなく、認識の過程において必然的に生じる情報の欠落である。膨大なデータによって構築されたAIは、世界を選択的に抽象化し続けている。本作品は、その過程で取りこぼされる「計算不可能なノイズ」の構造を可視化し、人間がなおそこに意味や存在を見出してしまう認識の在り方を問う。

This work is an attempt to reconstruct the features (latent) extracted by generative AI as a structure, thereby questioning the very conditions under which an image is established. Since the dawn of Modernism, art has critiqued the consumption and reproduction of images by reducing them to "surfaces." Today, generative AI, through vast computation, transforms language, concepts, and even perceptions into visual data, continuing to process the world as a layer of informational surfaces. In an era where all phenomena converge into "retinal" symbols, where does this excessive superficiality lead us?

生成AIが抽出した特徴量（latent）を構造として再構成し、イメージが成立する条件そのものを問い直す試み。近代以降、芸術はイメージを表層へと還元することで、イメージの消費と複製を批評した。現在、LLMは膨大な計算を通じて、言語や概念、知覚までも視覚イメージへと変換し、世界を表層として処理し続けている。あらゆる事象が網膜的（retinal）な記号へと収斂していく現代において、過度な表層性の行き着く先はどこか。
